When Sugar Isn't That Sweet Anymore
by Jula Hanf
If you suffer from Type 2 Diabetes, you must bear in mind that you are particularly susceptible to developing a condition called Hypoglycemia.
This means that the glucose levels in your blood stream may dip very low, causing you to feel lightheaded, tired, confused and can also make you
sweat profusely. If you dont treat these symptoms as soon as possible, you are putting yourself at a risk of developing seizures or even passing
out. As soon as you begin to feel the first warning signs of Hypoglycemia, it is advisable that you consume glucose tablets, half a cup of fruit
juice or some hard boiled candy. If your condition deteriorates, make sure that you are administered a glucagon injection or that someone takes
you to the hospital for emergency treatment without any further delay.
As a victim of Type 2 Diabetes, you are also at a potential risk of developing Hyperglycemia or high blood sugar. This is when your body does
not have the mount of insulin it needs to break down the glucose which leads to the glucose accumulating in your bloodstream. Your body will also
attempt to flush out this sugar by urinating a lot more than is usual, which will also lead to you feeling uncommonly thirsty.
Deprived of the glucose it needs to fuel itself, your body then begins to convert fats or lipids into energy. This process of metabolism leads
to the generation of Ketones as toxic byproducts. Your body does the best it can to eliminate these Ketones via urine, but there is still some
amount of Ketones that stay behind. These build up in your blood and cause the potentially life-threatening Ketoacidosis. Once again, you need to
take immediate action if you doubt that youre breath smells unnaturally fruity, or you feel breathless and nauseous.
Type 2 Diabetes also increases your chances of developing Focal Neuropathy where a group of nerves in your body is affected, causing double
vision, pain and also partial paralysis. Diabetes may also lead to an affliction which is termed as Compressed Nerves. This condition, where the
brain does not receive the signals which are transmitted by your nerves, can also develop into the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome or a tingling sensation
in your fingers and muscle pain.
The causes of Type 2 Diabetes range from the genetic, to the dietary and lifestyle to even your age and gender. Although you may be more
likely to inherit diabetes if you have a family history of this disease, a sedentary lifestyle and poor nutrition may expedite the process. Also,
the rising number of women diabetics is changing the perception that it is males who are more prone to the disease, while the alarming occurrence
of Juvenile Diabetes has poked holes into the theory that it is only the elderly or the middle aged who are known to suffer from diabetes.
The most important way to keep your diabetes under control is to make sure you get some exercise everyday and also keep your weight under
control. Space your meals at regular intervals to ensure that you are never hungry for too long. Also make it a point to check your glucose
levels often and treat any abnormalities immediately or consult your doctor. If checking your glucose isnt possible and you do begin to feel the
onset of either hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia, treat your symptoms. It is always a wiser alternative to be safe, rather than be sorry. Diabetes
can be a serious problem if you dont adhere to the guidelines the doctor has prescribed, but with a few precautions, you are well on your way to
leading a long and fulfilling life.
